I tried my first CrossFit workout in early 2008. The WOD was “Fight Gone Bad”. While skeptical before starting, I knew instantly that this was the fitness program for me. With a background in coaching football, basketball, track & field and weightlifting; I saw the potential of CrossFit.

After immersing myself in the CrossFit Methodology for over a year, I decided to attend a CF level 1 certification. Shortly there after I applied for affiliation and CrossFit Rebellion was born. CrossFit Rebellion started as an outdoor bootcamp and then opened in our first brick & mortar location on July 1, 2009.  Since then, CFR has grown a great deal, as has my vision and passion for CrossFit.

I have since become a CrossFit Level 2 instructor and have attended countless seminars to continue  my education. I use this knowledge to deliver the most comprehensive, well designed CrossFit program possible. I focus on general physical fitness and adherence to true CrossFit methodology. A teacher at heart, my favorite aspect of coaching and owning a gym is having the opportunity to help others realize the potential they possess.

I’ve always been involved in sports and fitness, but in 2008 I was introduced to CrossFit by my Dad. Initially I wasn’t sold on the idea and didn’t want to give up my running and spin classes. I played around with 1 or 2 WOD’s a week for several months and then in October of that year, I decided to take on CrossFit as my main form of exercise. It changed my life. Within 3 months, I was stronger than I had ever been and was doing things I never thought I could like unassisted pull ups, overhead squats and deadlifting more than my bodyweight. Shortly after, I found out I was pregnant. I CrossFitted through my pregnancy and felt great. In May of 2010, I received my Level 1 certification and joined Kyle as a trainer at the gym. This was never a career I would have pictured for myself, but I enjoy it so much. Teaching clients to move well and then watching them make progress and gains and meet their fitness goals is so rewarding.  I am also very passionate about nutrition and love to help people improve their their life by changing their eating habits.

After years of distance running, Lauren found Crossfit in 2010 when she witnessed Crossfit Rebellion members working out one day on her way home from work. As a former gymnast and cheerleader, Lauren was excited to utilize movements and skills she had not used in years.

When she is not “WODing,” Lauren is an attorney and is working on a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration.  As a trainer at CFR, Lauren hopes to continue to improve her coaching skills as well as progress her own personal performance and fitness.

Matt began crossfit in June 2012 at CFR. He grew up playing pretty much every sport as a kid with ice hockey being his main focus through the high school level. After high school he continued to play a number of intramural sports and pick-up games with friends while he attended Auburn University. After he graduated from Auburn in May of 2009, he moved back to Birmingham, got married, and started his own lawn care company. Once back in Birmingham he realized that he missed the routine of going to the gym or having some kind of recreational sport to keep him physically active, so that is when he found crossfit at CFR. Once he started crossfitting he was instantly hooked. He loved the community aspect that CFR had compared to any other gym that he had ever been a member of, as well as the programming and competition that was provided at CFR.

“It’s different than any other kind of fitness training I’ve ever done. I love how the WOD’s are always different in some aspect, and how you can always look back on past workouts and compare previous times, weights, etc. to see how far you’ve come over time. But my favorite part of crossfit is definitely the mental side of it. I sincerely believe that crossfit has improved my mental strength just as much, if not more, than my physical strength. Being able to fight through the pain of a workout, and to just make yourself keep moving when your body tells you to stop is the most rewarding part of doing a WOD. I’m definitely in the best shape of my life, and I owe it all to crossfit”.

As a trainer at CFR Matt hopes to share his enthusiasm for crossfit with all of CFR’s members, as well as to provide the knowledge that he has gained about how to use constantly varied, high intensity, functional movements to improve your fitness as well as your life in general.

I began CrossFit in April of 2013. I had a heard about CrossFit and how it was different than any other “fitness” routines out there so I decided to give it a shot. I had been routinely exercising for about 3-4 years before beginning CrossFit so I felt like this wouldn’t be any more difficult than anything I was already doing.  I was very wrong!  CrossFit introduced me to not only a more intense and effective form of exercise, but also a fantastic community of individuals with common goals as well as a wealth of nutrition information that is absent in many exercise programs. My favorite aspects of CrossFit are that it will check your ego and expose your weaknesses as an athlete.  Put in real and honest work, check your ego, make new friend and connections… that’s what I think CrossFit is all about!

I travel for my career so I drop-in a lot of gyms across the country. I see many different coaching styles and programming. I can honestly say the coaching and programming at CFR are top notch and are what CrossFit is meant to be.
